What the Engine Coolant Water Pump does
The water pump circulates coolant through the engine and radiator. When its seal wears, coolant leaks from the weep hole; when its bearing wears, it whines and can eventually let the impeller or pulley wobble.
A failing pump often shows up first as a slow coolant loss — easy to ignore until the engine overheats under load during a long outage.
Signs it needs replacing
- Coolant leaking or crusted deposits at the pump weep hole.
- Whining or grinding from the pump area; pulley wobble.
- Overheating under load with the thermostat and belt OK.
- Coolant level dropping between services.

Fitting notes
Drain coolant, fit with new gaskets or seals, and refill with the correct mix, bleeding air out. Replace the thermostat and belt at the same time if they are due — it saves a second job.

It means the seal is failing. Plan the replacement soon — it will get worse, often during a long run.
Should I change the thermostat too?+
If it is due or suspect, yes. The coolant is drained anyway, so it saves labour.
