What the Cummins 6BT Thermostat (83°C) does
The thermostat controls coolant flow to the radiator so a Cummins 6BT reaches and holds working temperature. It is a small wax-element valve, but when it sticks it can shut the generator down on high temperature in the middle of a power cut.
A thermostat stuck open is less dramatic but still costly: the engine runs cold, combustion is poor, and fuel dilutes the oil.
Signs it needs replacing
- High-temperature alarm or shutdown under load.
- Top hose cold while the engine temperature gauge is high.
- Engine slow to warm up, or never reaching normal temperature.
- Coolant seeping at the thermostat housing.
Get the right part first time
Send us these on WhatsApp and our engineers will confirm the exact part before you pay:
- Engine serial / CPL number from the Cummins dataplate.
- A clear photo of the old part, including any label, stamping or part number on it.
Fitting notes
Fit with a new seal, make sure it seats correctly in the housing, then refill with the correct coolant mix and bleed air from the system. Check the belt, radiator cap and radiator fins at the same time — overheating often has more than one cause.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know the thermostat is stuck?+
If the engine is hot but the top radiator hose stays cool, the thermostat is probably not opening.
Is coolant type important?+
Yes. Use the recommended coolant mix — plain water causes corrosion and scale that block the radiator.
Can you check the whole cooling system?+
Yes. We pressure-test the system, check the cap, belt, pump and radiator, and load-test the set.
