What the Cummins 6BT Starter Motor (24V) does
Cummins 6BT engines power a large share of 60–150 kVA generator sets. Their starter motor must crank a 5.9-litre engine quickly enough to start it — every time the mains fails.
Starters on standby sets often fail from corrosion and long inactivity rather than wear. A weak battery also overworks the starter and shortens its life.
Signs it needs replacing
- Click with no crank, or very slow cranking.
- Grinding when engaging, or the pinion not engaging.
- Smoke or a burning smell from the starter.
Get the right part first time
Send us these on WhatsApp and our engineers will confirm the exact part before you pay:
- The label on your old starter (voltage and part number).
- Engine serial / CPL number.
- A photo of the generator nameplate (make, model, kVA, serial number).
Fitting notes
Isolate the battery first. Inspect the ring gear and clean all cable connections. Most 6BT sets are 24 V, but some are 12 V — the replacement must match. Test cranking voltage and engagement after fitting.
Frequently asked questions
What size generators use the 6BT?+
Typically sets of roughly 60–150 kVA, depending on rating and build.
12 V or 24 V?+
Check the label on your existing starter or the battery arrangement. We supply the matching voltage.
Can a starter be repaired instead?+
Sometimes — brushes, bushes or the solenoid can be replaced. We will tell you whether repair or replacement is better value.
