What the Universal Hand Primer Pump Assembly does
Every time a fuel filter is changed or the tank runs dry, air gets into the fuel system — and a diesel engine will not run on air. A hand primer pump pushes fuel through the filters to purge it, so the engine starts without long cranking.
Primers on older sets often crack, stick or leak. A leaking primer also lets air in while the engine runs, causing hunting and stalling that is hard to trace.
Signs it needs replacing
- The primer plunger sticks, has no resistance, or does not return.
- Diesel leaking around the primer or filter head.
- Air in the fuel system that keeps coming back after bleeding.
Get the right part first time
Send us these on WhatsApp and our engineers will confirm the exact part before you pay:
- A clear photo of the old part, including any label, stamping or part number on it.
- The filter fitted to the head (part number or photo).
- A photo of the generator nameplate (make, model, kVA, serial number).
Fitting notes
Fit with new sealing washers and make sure the inlet and outlet connections match the direction of flow. Prime until firm resistance, open the bleed screw until bubble-free fuel flows, then close it and start the engine.
Frequently asked questions
Why won't my generator start after a filter change?+
Almost always air in the system. Prime the fuel system until the primer is firm and bleed at the filter head and injection pump.
Can I prime by cranking the engine?+
It works sometimes but drains the battery and overheats the starter. A working primer is faster and safer.
Is a leaking primer serious?+
Yes — it lets air in while the engine runs, which causes hunting and stalling, and spilled diesel is a fire risk.
