This checklist is designed to help you safely gather the information you need in the next five minutes — either to restart the generator yourself or to give our emergency engineers the information they need to diagnose and fix the problem as fast as possible.
Safety first: Before approaching the generator, ensure the room is ventilated. Never enter a generator room where you can smell strong fuel fumes without ventilating first. Do not attempt to open panels or touch electrical components unless you are trained to do so.
The 5-Step Emergency Checklist
Check the Control Panel Display
Go directly to the generator control panel (DSE, ComAp, Woodward, or the manufacturer's own panel). Almost all modern control panels display a fault code or alarm description when the generator shuts down on a protective shutdown. This is the single most valuable piece of information you can gather.
Common Fault Codes
- Low Oil Pressure: Oil level low, oil pump failure, or sensor fault
- High Engine Temperature: Coolant low, thermostat stuck, radiator blocked
- Overcurrent / Overload: Too much load on the generator
- Low Fuel: Fuel tank empty or fuel supply blocked
- Battery Voltage Low: Battery discharged or alternator charging fault
- Failed to Start: Starter, battery, or fuel issue
Write Down or Photograph:
- The exact fault code or text
- Any alarm lights that are on
- The generator's current hour meter reading
- The time the fault occurred (if shown)
Check the Three Fluid Levels
Three fluid-related faults account for more than 60% of all emergency generator shutdowns: low oil, low coolant, and low fuel. These are also the three checks most people can safely do themselves without specialist training.
Engine Oil
Pull the dipstick. Oil should be between MIN and MAX marks. If it is below MIN, do not restart.
If oil is very dark black and smells burnt, it is overdue for a change.
Coolant Level
Check the header tank or overflow bottle (the translucent plastic tank). Level should be between MIN and MAX. Never open the radiator cap when the engine is hot.
Green or blue coolant is normal. Brown or rusty coolant indicates contamination.
Fuel Level
Check the fuel gauge or sight glass on the day tank. If the tank is empty or near empty, the fuel supply has likely been interrupted.
A fuel gauge stuck at a level should be verified with a dipstick — gauges can fail.
Check the Circuit Breakers
A generator that appears to have stopped running may actually still be running — but the output circuit breaker has tripped due to a fault or overload on the load side. Check the generator's main output breaker (usually located on the generator control panel or in an adjacent panel) and any sub-breakers in the distribution board it feeds.
Important: If a circuit breaker has tripped and you reset it, the fault that caused it to trip must be identified before resuming normal operation. A breaker that trips again immediately may indicate a sustained fault on the load side (a short circuit or damaged equipment).
Attempt a Manual Restart (If Safe)
If the fault code indicates a non-critical issue (e.g., "Failed to Start" due to a cold engine, or a transient sensor alarm that has cleared), you may attempt a single manual restart. Here is the correct procedure:
- 1Confirm all fluid levels are adequate and no critical fault (oil pressure, coolant temp) remains active.
- 2Press the 'Fault Reset' or 'Alarm Reset' button on the control panel to clear the latched alarm.
- 3Switch the panel to MANUAL mode.
- 4Press START and observe the engine. It should start within 10–15 seconds.
- 5Watch the oil pressure gauge — it should rise to normal within 5 seconds of starting.
- 6If the engine starts but immediately shuts down again, stop attempting restarts and call an engineer.
Know When to Call — and What to Say
If the generator does not restart, or if the fault code indicates a serious mechanical or electrical issue, call an emergency engineer immediately. When you call, have the following information ready — it will help the engineer bring the right tools and parts:
Information to Have Ready
- Generator brand and model (e.g., Cummins C400D5)
- The fault code or alarm text from the panel
- Whether the engine is cranking but not starting, or not cranking at all
- Current oil, coolant, and fuel status
- Last service date (if known)
- Your physical location and access instructions
Do NOT Attempt to:
- Open the alternator end cover or electrical panels without training
- Add water to the radiator when the engine is hot
- Force-start an engine that is showing a low oil pressure fault
- Bypass or tape over safety shutdown sensors
- Run the generator with visible fuel or oil leaks

Preventing the Next Emergency

- Test your generator under building load monthly to confirm it starts and accepts load reliably.
- Replace batteries proactively after 3 years — a failed battery is the #1 cause of 'failed to start' emergencies.
